“Close the borders,” says Arnold.
He then goes on to say: “This is a very important debate. I think it’s necessary that we solve the problems rather than try to run the other way. It’s a hot issue.” Run the other way? How is clamping down on those who would like a better life in this country “solving the problems”? Closing the borders seems more like a final step of a plan rather than the beginning of a dialogue. Unless of course one views it as an actual problem that people would like to come to this country and be productive.
His spokeswoman later couched the governor’s position in the debate as an issue of security.
First of all, it is my belief that the huge majority of people willing to risk their lives to get into this country are doing so because they simply want a chance to make a better life for themselves and their children. Now doesn’t it follow that if those same people are coming for a better life they are a security threat. Of course, there are others who may pose a threat, but wouldn’t it be fair to think that the honest people immigrating to the U.S. would be as concerned as current residents of the U.S. as to security threats and report things they may see first hand to proper authorities? After all, they are making this country their home as well.
Making it an issue of security and legality also completely ignores the economic advantages of open immigration. But don’t get me started.
