wow, sponsored links work!

I think it’s probably the first Sponsored Link in Gmail that I’ve clicked. I get emails with the content of comments posted to my blog and when I came home today I saw that Joe had commented on my post about IM clients. One of the sponsored links at the bottom of the email said “Linux for Newbies”. I thought, Perfect! That’s me! and proceed to click and get a free electronic subscription to Tux Magazine. We’ll see if it ends up just being spam.

Leave for the first time

So I just found out that at tonight’s show in Spain, R.E.M. played the song “Leave” for the first time ever. I’m so jealous. It’s my favorite song. I’ve been collecting shows for about 8 or 9 years, always wishing to hear this song played. Now I’m kind of depressed that I didn’t get to see it. Hopefully a recording at least surfaces.

IM dilemma

At the beginning of May I switched over to Trillian from Gaim. I really like Gaim, but it gets extremely frustrating when trying to use File Transfer or DirectIM over the AIM protocol on Gaim. I know I’m behind a firewall and many other people are too, but DirectIM works perfectly fine in AIM itself and even in Trillian, so why can’t it work through Gaim? Signing on just to receive pictures in an IM is a big hassle, especially after people try to DirectConnect 3 or 4 times with no success. Other people are bothered by this flaw too and heated words have been tossed about.

Trillian (I’m using the free version) seems like a pretty good client. My complaints about it are probably minor, but hey, a preference is a preference. I dislike text based logs; I much prefer HTML based ones. Also, I got very used to the Away Message settings and functionality of Gaim. There are just less mouse clicks to get what I want. I like to put up where I’m working every day in my away messages and in Gaim I can put the old one up and it’s a quick “Edit Message” click to just update it. With Trillian I have to create a new message every day and then deliberately not save it so as to not get a huge build up of old away messages. Gaim also allows me to fake my idle time, which can be nice occasionally. Normally I never “hide” from anyone online, but I’ve wanted to a few times. It’s nice to know I can.

I think I’ve concluded that having nice HTML logs is more important to me than the convenience of DirectIM which I rarely use. I’m switching back.

amo muito tudo isso

What does it mean if I find myself eating a cold McChicken sandwich alone in my room at just after 6pm on a Monday?

This will probably be a post that is way too short to describe all the activities of the past few days.

I really should figure out a way to make my blog useful like Gary North says. For now, it is not.

I went up to see Mike Doughty on Friday night. I went to the show by myself, but drove up with Jessica. She had her own show to go to. I had a good time, didn’t talk to anyone, but that’s ok. He’s one of the most fun guys to see live because he interacts with the crowd like crazy. He let us vote on the song he was going to play, he asks us if there is anything we want to talk about, and he heckles back at the hecklers. I got to hear some of my favorite songs too, like “Rising Sign”, “Soft Serve”, and even “St. Louise is Listening”. I was also glad he played 9 out of 12 of the songs off the new record. Afterwards I bought a t-shirt and had him cross out the “Small” of where it said “Small Rock World Tour” because during the show he told us that Small Rock is dead. Now we have Medium Rock.

I got to unexpectedly hang out with Tiphereth on Saturday. It turns out that she was up in SF for a few days because she sprained her ankle and needed to recuperate. I hadn’t expected to see her for 6 months. We had a few drinks at a bar, played pool, took photo booth pictures with props from my car, sat around atop Twin Peaks with prom kids and Japanese tourists, went to the beach which was crowded with drunken teenagers, then walked around in the woods. This last activity was ill-fated. We were on a little trail, actually heading back to the car with the aim of finding something to eat at 1 in the morning, but a gopher hole landed under her foot. It just happened to be the one with the injured ankle attached to it. She said it hurt pretty badly and so I took her home. Thus the evening was unfortunately cut short. I can’t complain about it too much since the entire visit was a pleasant surprise. I just hope she didn’t hurt herself any worse. Now we return to the life of being penpals.

The highlight of today, believe it or not, was the clam chowder at Fresh Choice. It was absolutely amazing.

cheese and heretics

Country Cheese Co., originally uploaded by mrwilloby.

This one’s for Jessica: The latest search to bring someone to my site came from Yahoo! The search term was “where is a nerd”.

So this novel I’m reading, The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, is supposed to be pretty high-level stuff. If I step back and think about it I suppose it is. Very dense on the medieval history which is right up my alley. I didn’t know exactly how much it would be until I got into it though. The book practically centers around a topic that I did about a month’s worth of research on for a paper a year ago. I was going to write about heresy in the late middle ages, specifically the Waldensians. All the various heresies of the 14th century are touched upon in the book along with all the major characters in them.

I felt odd today when I was reading the beginning of a chapter. The abbey where the story is taking place is about to receive an envoy from the Pope to settle some differences. It is suspenseful because the abbey is more aligned with the Emporer than the pope and so relations are delicate.

The abbot was waiting for us with a grim, worried look. He was holding a paper in his hand.

“Who is it?”

“Bernard Gui, or Bernardo Guidoni, whichever you choose to call him.”

My reaction right after this was exactly like those of the characters. I stopped for a moment in shock. Bernard Gui the inquisitor! I knew exactly who the guy was without any explanation from the book. He actually wrote a manual for identifying and trying heretics. I’ve read a good portion of it. Then I thought about it for a moment. Very few people would have any idea about this guy. I wonder if this book is absolutely more enjoyable to me because I can follow everything and pick up all the details about the background.

Anyway, I am really enjoying it, and it would probably be a good mystery novel for anyone else too.

Good Day

look it’s me, originally uploaded by mrwilloby.

Today is a good day. In the mail I got a package from a fellow trader, an Autolux show! Yay! Then I went online to see if the NIN sets were up from the SF shows. They weren’t yet, but the Dresden Dolls from the night I went was up. It’s a pretty good recording, I’m happy. Then I decided to search for more Autolux. I found a soundboard recording of the Raveonettes! The guy said he got a soundboard of Autolux too! I think he’ll post it because the demand looks pretty high. Today is a good day.

what can I do?

watch your hands, originally uploaded by mrwilloby.

I’ve been meaning to write something for the last few days. I’ve even had great ideas of things to write about. But when it comes down to it, I just don’t feel like sitting here and writing. And now I don’t even remember what all my thoughts were.

One thing was that I took some photos and posted them on Flickr. Whenever I work at Yerba Buena I drive by this old General Electric plant/facility on Tully. It always looks really creepy and cool to me because the parking lots are overgrowing with weeds and the buildings look like they are falling down. I have a thing for ruins. Especially ruins in the process of becoming ruins. Across the street was a cemetery. I got some pictures of that without going in.

Ah yes, and now for some search updates. I kind of liked “sex tommy” coming in from Korea, and “hairlip photos” is always a classic. There were a couple longer interesting ones in the last few days too. We had “COGITO ERGO SUM hitchhiker’s guide” from Australia and then “things you can make with fur fabric”. All in all, not a bad smattering from the search engines.

after all that

I forgot to post everything I was going to.

Apparently my site comes up on Yahoo! when “crotch shots” is searched for. That’s pretty awesome. It’s even more awesome that two people in one day searched for it and clicked on my site.

And I got a hit from Japan. My site apparently showed up on the Japanese Yahoo! The search terms are all crazy code so I have no idea how that worked.

I went out for tea today.

It was chamomile citrus. I had a nice time. I was at the Pruneyard so I stopped by and said hi to Christy. She wasn’t doing anything and was on her last client so she agreed to have dinner with me. She liked being able to go home and tell Logan that she went out with someone. He just doesn’t have to know it was only her brother.

While I was waiting for her I went over to Barnes & Noble. Books will be the death of me. My bookshelves are already full.

FUuuck. I rarely get annoyed. I am right now. I started writing this post an hour and a half ago and have been constantly interrupted since. My mom and dad each need help with little fuckity computer problems. I just want to do my own things right now. It’s incredibly frustrating trying to fix things with them there too because their computers are too slow and aahhh! I need to calm down. </rant>

Anyway, all I wanted to say was that I bought another book when I was there: The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. Andy recently recommended another one of his books to me: Foucault’s Pendulum. I read somewhere that the guy is a medievalist. Awesome.
